Five Nigerian firms push NGX to biggest single-day gain of N953bn

The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) recorded its largest single-day increase in market capitalization on Friday, January 9, 2026, after gains in five major stocks lifted the market by N953 billion.

The rally was driven by strong price appreciation in Industrial and Medical Gases, McNicholas, SCOA Nigeria, May and Baker, and FTN Cocoa Processors, alongside gains in 43 other equities.

As a result, total market capitalization rose by 0.93 percent, climbing from N102.822 trillion at the opening to N103.775 trillion at the close of trading, adding N953 billion to investors’ wealth.

In the same vein, the All-Share Index advanced by 0.93 percent, gaining 1,491.52 points to settle at 162,298.08, up from 160,806.56 in the previous session.

Market sentiment was positive, with 48 stocks recording gains against 28 decliners, indicating widespread buying interest across sectors.

Industrial and Medical Gases, SCOA Nigeria, McNicholas, May and Baker, and FTN Cocoa Processors emerged as the top performers for the day.

On the flip side, Aluminium Extrusion Industries led the losers, shedding 9.91 percent to close at N19.10, followed by Austinlaz, Sovereign Trust Insurance, and Prestige Assurance.

Trading activity saw 624.1 million shares exchanged in 43,816 deals, with a turnover value of N18.5 billion, compared with 645.1 million shares worth N16.4 billion in the preceding session.
