A former member of the House of Representatives and one-time Chief of Staff to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, Mustapha Bala Dawaki, has officially left the ruling party for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dawaki formally joined the opposition party on Monday during a meeting with the leader of the NDC and founder of the Kwankwasiyya political movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his Miller Road residence in Kano.
As part of the reception ceremony, the former APC stalwart was decorated with the signature red cap synonymous with the Kwankwasiyya movement, symbolising his formal entry into the political bloc.
The defection comes shortly after Dawaki reportedly failed to secure the APC consensus ticket for the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Confirming the development, Saifullahi Hassan, media aide to Kwankwaso, announced in a statement on Monday that Dawaki had joined the NDC together with his supporters.

“Leader has today accepted the former Chief of Staff to the APC National Chairman, Mustapha Bala Dawaki, popularly known as Mai Gidan Ruwa, into the NDC Kwankwasiyya movement,” Hassan wrote in a Facebook post.
Political analysts described the move as another significant shift within Kano’s political landscape, especially as both ruling and opposition parties continue consultations, negotiations and alliance-building ahead of the 2027 elections.
Before his appointment as Chief of Staff to the APC National Chairman, Dawaki represented Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
His latest political move adds to the growing wave of defections and strategic repositioning currently reshaping party structures and alliances across Kano State.
