The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened this week following a fresh petition by the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, over alleged signature forgery.
Anyanwu had accused unnamed officials of PDP of forging his signature in a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concerning the party’s forthcoming national convention.
August 29, 2025 – Contested Letter to INEC
The controversy traces back to August 29, 2025, when a letter purportedly signed by Senator Anyanwu was sent to INEC, notifying the commission of the PDP’s plans to hold its National Elective Convention on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Anyanwu has since denied authoring or approving the correspondence, claiming his signature was forged and cloned.
October 15–16, 2025 – Petitions to INEC, DSS, and IGP
On October 15, Anyanwu formally drafted petitions addressed to the Department of State Services (DSS), the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and INEC, calling for a full-scale investigation into what he described as a “criminal act” within the party’s hierarchy.
The petitions, received by the agencies on October 16, detailed his denial and attached excerpts of the alleged forged document for reference.
In his letter to the Acting INEC Chairman, titled “Petition Against Forgery and Cloning of My Signature,” Anyanwu stated that the disputed letter “was never signed, authorised, or known to me,” urging authorities to “investigate and prosecute the culprits.”
October 2025 – Rising Tensions Ahead of PDP Convention
The forgery allegations emerged against the backdrop of growing tension within the PDP over preparations for the national convention.
Despite a formal decision to stage the event in Ibadan, factions loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, remain locked in disputes with the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum.

The disagreements, centred on South-South leadership, control of party structures in key states such as Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Plateau, and the micro-zoning formula, have since escalated to the courts.
October 15, 2025 – Legal Action Over Convention Disputes
In suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/25, PDP chairmen from Imo and Abia States, Austin Nwachukwu and Amah Abraham Nnanna, alongside South-South Zonal Secretary Turnah Alabah George, dragged the Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) to court, alleging constitutional breaches and irregularities in the build-up to the convention.
The defendants in the suit include INEC, the PDP, Damagum, and other senior officials.
October 15, 2025 – Courtroom Confusion Over PDP Representation
At a hearing before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, confusion arose as two Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Kamaldeen Ajibade and Chief Chris Uche, both claimed to represent the PDP.
Justice Omotosho adjourned proceedings to October 16, directing both lawyers to present evidence of their authorization. The substantive hearing was fixed for October 20, with all parties ordered to exchange documents by October 17.
October 16, 2025 – NWC Letter Deepens Leadership Rift
On the same day, 14 members of the PDP’s National Working Committee reportedly signed a letter reaffirming the decision to remove the National Legal Adviser, citing alleged compromise, and appointing Chief Chris Uche (SAN) in his stead.
Ajibade, however, insisted he remains the legitimate National Legal Adviser, arguing that only a national convention holds the authority to remove him.
October 16, 2025 – Anyanwu’s Follow-Up Petitions
In separate letters to the DSS Director-General and the Inspector General of Police, Anyanwu reiterated his claims of forgery, describing the act as “shocking” and demanding a thorough investigation into “officers of the PDP and their collaborators within INEC.”
He maintained that the forgery incident was part of a wider plot to undermine his office and destabilize the party’s internal processes.
