Nollywood powerhouse Funke Akindele has rewritten African cinema history after her latest film, Behind The Scenes, surpassed the unprecedented ₦2 billion mark at the box office, cementing her status as the highest-grossing filmmaker on the continent.
According to figures released by film analytics platform Filmoneng, Behind The Scenes has now grossed over ₦2.1 billion across cinemas in Africa, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time. The milestone marks the first time any Nigerian film has crossed the ₦2 billion threshold.
The historic achievement was confirmed on Sunday, January 12, 2025, and later celebrated by Akindele herself on Instagram. In a jubilant post featuring a celebratory dance, the actress and producer expressed gratitude to her fans for driving the film’s remarkable success.
“Joy overflow! Our heart is full of gratitude to God and to you, my amazing fans who have truly become family,” Akindele wrote, describing the feat as a collective victory powered by unwavering audience support.

The box office triumph also marks Akindele’s third consecutive year at the top of the charts, reinforcing her dominance in Nigeria’s film industry and her growing influence across African cinemas.
Meanwhile, fellow Nollywood star and box office rival Toyin Abraham also recorded a personal milestone, as her latest release, Oversabi Aunty, crossed a career-best ₦863 million in cinema earnings.
Together, the record-breaking performances underscore a defining moment for Nollywood, highlighting its expanding commercial power and rising appeal across the African continent.
