The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of six family members discovered in a locked room in Ogale, Eleme, on Sunday.

According to the police, Godwin Ogosu, the brother of one of the victims, reported that his elder brother, his brother’s wife, and their children did not wake up, with the doors still locked.

In a statement on Monday, Police Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko said officers from the Eleme Division responded promptly, forced the doors open, and found six lifeless bodies.

The victims have been identified as 49-year-old Theophilus Obele, 35-year-old Eunice Obele, 25-year-old Abel Nwaka, 18-year-old Saka Obele, 14-year-old Peace Obele, and seven-year-old Nyimenka Obele.

Iringe-Koko said preliminary investigations suggest that generator fumes left running inside the house may have caused their deaths.

“Preliminary investigation suggests possible generator fume poisoning as the cause of death.

“The generator was reportedly left on in the parlour of the Victims.

“The corpses have been deposited at Last Home Mortuary, Ebubu Eleme, for autopsy. Photographic evidence has been taken, and investigation is ongoing.”

The bodies have been taken to the mortuary for autopsy, and the police continue to investigate.

Rivers State Police Commissioner, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed a comprehensive probe, and the command has extended its condolences to the bereaved families.
