Governor Mai Mala Buni on Tuesday commissioned the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the Yobe State Police Command, saying it marks a milestone in the state’s push for safety and justice.
Speaking at the ceremony held at the Old Area in Damaturu, Buni, represented by his Deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, said the unit was created to tackle what he described as one of the most pressing threats to peace and development.
“Violent crime remains one of the most pressing threats to peace and development. It is for this reason that the Yobe State Police Command deemed it necessary to establish a dedicated Violent Crime Response Unit trained to act swiftly, professionally and in line with the rule of law,” the governor said.
He said the VCRU has been equipped with personnel, training and tools to respond decisively to kidnapping, armed robbery, culpable homicide, unlawful possession of firearms, organised criminal activities and other violent crimes.
Buni urged VCRU officers to justify the confidence reposed in them by responding rapidly, protecting citizens and upholding human rights.
“The success of this unit will be measured not just by arrests made but by the confidence citizens regain in walking their streets safely,” he said.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Commissioner of Police, Yobe State Command, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, said the unit is part of the Inspector-General of Police’s strategic initiative aimed at strengthening proactive policing, combating violent crimes and enhancing rapid response to criminal activities across the country.
“The establishment of the Unit demonstrates the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force towards safeguarding lives and property, as well as tackling emerging security challenges through intelligence-led policing and strategic operations”, he stated.
Jibrin noted that the VCRU will serve as a specialised tactical unit dedicated to combating crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, culpable homicide, youth restiveness, hooliganism, drug and substance abuse, and other violent-related offences within the state and its environs.
