Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), and other Northern leaders on Saturday called for renewed unity and stronger action against insecurity as the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, marked its 25th anniversary.

Gowon, represented by former Vice President Namadi Sambo, said unity and peace remained critical to the region’s stability. He warned that extremists continue to exploit divisions within Northern communities.

He recalled that the ACF was created to promote moderation and cohesion and urged leaders to reinforce these values across the region.

ACF Board of Trustees Chairman, Bashir Dalhatu, said insecurity had worsened, pointing to frequent attacks, abductions and the recent killing of a senior military officer. He noted that the closure of many boarding schools due to insecurity threatens the future of Northern children.

Dalhatu called for stronger cooperation among traditional rulers, state governments and security agencies.

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, represented by his deputy, Dr Hadiza Balarabe, restated the state’s commitment to peace and community engagement. He said improved intelligence coordination had helped reduce security incidents and encouraged farmers to return to their farms.

Northern leaders at the event said the region’s progress depends on unity, effective security operations and long-term investment in citizens. They reaffirmed the ACF’s role in guiding discussions on peace and development.
