Hamas urges Iran to avoid striking neighbouring countries

The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas has urged Iran to avoid launching attacks against neighbouring states, even as it affirmed Tehran’s right to defend itself in the ongoing conflict involving Israel and the United States.

In a statement released on Saturday, Hamas said while Iran has the right to respond to aggression, it should refrain from extending its military actions to nearby countries.

“While affirming the right of the Islamic Republic of Iran to respond to this aggression by all available means in accordance with international norms and laws, the movement calls on the brothers in Iran to avoid targeting neighbouring countries,” the group said.

Hamas also appealed to the international community to intensify efforts toward an immediate end to the ongoing conflict.

The group, which has been engaged in a prolonged and destructive war with Israel in Gaza Strip, had earlier condemned the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing the act as a “heinous crime”.

In its earlier reaction, Hamas acknowledged Khamenei’s long-standing support for the Palestinian cause, noting that he provided significant political, diplomatic, and military backing to the movement and its resistance activities.
