The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has urged the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, NPTF, to prioritise welfare support for lower-ranking officers, noting their central role in frontline security operations nationwide.

He explained that officers in the junior cadre shoulder the bulk of day-to-day policing responsibilities across the country.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid.

According to the statement, Disu made the appeal while hosting the Executive Secretary of the NPTF, Alhaji Mohammed Sheidu, and members of the Fund’s Board during a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting served as a platform to deepen cooperation between the Nigeria Police Force and the Trust Fund, with a focus on strengthening reforms and enhancing operational performance.

“The IG specifically called on the NPTF to direct targeted welfare programmes at junior-ranked officers, emphasising that those at the lower cadre carry the heaviest operational burdens and deserve structured, consistent support.

“Disu reaffirmed his commitment to building a more responsive, technologically driven, and citizen-focused Nigeria Police Force through the partnership, ” the statement partly read.

Disu also highlighted welfare as a major priority area, stressing that better housing, improved access to healthcare, and timely payment of insurance and other benefits are vital for raising morale, discipline, and overall effectiveness within the Force.

In his remarks, Sheidu reiterated the NPTF’s resolve to continue supporting the police through sustainable, needs-based initiatives in welfare, training, and operational development.

He pointed to key milestones, including over 100 training programmes benefiting more than 13,000 officers, completion of more than 170 infrastructure projects nationwide, and interventions in housing, healthcare, and smart policing systems.

He further stated that the Fund remains committed to boosting operational capacity, upgrading facilities, and ensuring its programmes align with the strategic direction of the Police.

The engagement comes as part of ongoing efforts to reform the Nigeria Police Force, with emphasis on improving efficiency, strengthening morale, and delivering better services, particularly by addressing the welfare concerns of junior officers who are most exposed on the frontlines.
