Police in Gujarat’s Morbi district, India, have arrested a labourer and his landlord over allegations involving the abuse of the worker’s wife and underage daughter in connection with unpaid house rent.

According to police reports, the family moved to Morbi about six months ago in search of better economic opportunities and rented an apartment for Rs 2,000 monthly.

Investigators said the family later experienced financial hardship and struggled to meet rental obligations.

Authorities alleged that the landlord took advantage of the situation by demanding sexual favours from the labourer’s wife in exchange for waiving the outstanding rent.

Police claimed the husband agreed to the arrangement, after which the landlord repeatedly assaulted the woman.

The investigation further revealed that the abuse later extended to the couple’s minor daughter.

According to local media reports, the child was allegedly taken to different locations, including a property in Tankara, where she was abused by the landlord and another suspect.

The case reportedly came to light after the woman’s maternal grandfather learned about the situation and lodged a complaint with the authorities.

Following the complaint, Morbi Police registered a case under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, BNS, and launched an investigation.

Both the labourer and the landlord were subsequently arrested. Police said the labourer had been remanded in prison custody, while the landlord was placed in one-day police custody for further questioning.

Authorities also confirmed that a third suspect linked to the case remains at large, adding that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the individual, according to India Today.
