‘Inferno, not explosives’, Kebbi police clarify cause of Bagudo General Hospital blast

2 hours ago 2

Residents of Bagudo were jolted awake in the early hours of Tuesday by a series of loud explosions at the General Hospital, sparking immediate fears of a targeted attack.

However, the Kebbi State Police Command has moved to douse the panic, confirming that the incident was an accidental fire rather than a criminal act.

SP Bashir Usman, the Police Public Relations Officer, explained in an official statement that the blasts were triggered by a fire that compromised hospital equipment. He noted that the explosion was caused by “an inferno which overheated air-conditioning and refrigerator gas cylinders, resulting in the loud explosions observed.”

Following the incident, specialized units, including Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD-CBRN) experts and the Commissioner of Police Tactical Team, were deployed to the hospital to conduct a forensic sweep.

Their findings definitively ruled out any external or intentional foul play. SP Usman stated:

“Investigations and expert assessments have confirmed that the incident was caused by an inferno. No explosives or aerial activity were involved.”

He further emphasized the depth of the investigation, adding: “Assessments conducted by EOD-CBRN experts, alongside the Commissioner of Police Tactical Team, confirmed that no explosives or aerial activity were involved.”

Despite the structural damage and the initial chaos that gripped the facility, authorities confirmed that no staff or patients were harmed during the fire.

“No loss of life or injuries occurred, as verified by the on-site expert teams,” the PPRO confirmed.

The Police Command used the opportunity to address circulating rumors on social media that suggested a bomb blast or the involvement of a helicopter. Law enforcement urged the public to remain calm and wait for verified facts.

“We advise everyone to rely solely on official information. The situation remains fully under control, and the Command remains committed to public safety and transparency,” Usman said.

While the hospital area remains secured by security agencies to prevent any further threats, the command reiterated that the event was entirely accidental.
