Emir of Yashikira, Alhaji Umoru Seriki, has decried the massive violent attacks on some communities in the Kwara North Senatorial District of the state.

In a telephone chat with DAILY POST on Wednesday, following Tuesday’s attack on two communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, the Emir lamented the wanton destruction of property and killings by armed bandits for no just cause.

“It is only God that can save us. It is not happening in Kaiama alone, but in all communities sharing common boundaries with the forests, Niger, and Sokoto states.

“Yashikira is facing frequent attacks, just as other communities are also under massive attacks by armed bandits.

“We don’t know what we have done or what sin we have committed to warrant the constant deadly attacks on our communities,” he added.

DAILY POST recalls that armed bandits on Tuesday evening attacked two communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, Woro and Nuku, killing scores and burning several houses in the process.

Unconfirmed reports reaching DAILY POST indicated that the death toll has risen to 40.

Following the bandits’ attack, soldiers and forest guards have taken over the communities to secure the areas.

A clue to the incident indicated that the bandits, who stormed the communities from neighbouring Niger State villages, came on a mission to preach to residents that they should jettison Nigeria’s constitution and embrace the Qur’an.

It was further gathered that the bandits had been going around neighbouring Niger State villages preaching the same message before infiltrating the affected communities in Kaiama Local Government of Kwara State.

During the sermon, dissenting voices angered the bandits, prompting them to open fire on the congregation.

The Kwara State government, through a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, on Tuesday, confirmed the bandits’ attack.

Ajakaye said Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq condemned the bloody attack and mourned the victims of the Kaiama assault, noting that security forces had continued to improve counterterrorism operations.

“The Governor condemns the attack, which he describes as a cowardly expression of frustration by terrorist cells following the ongoing counterterrorism campaigns in parts of the state and the successes recorded so far,” the statement read.
