French President Emmanuel Macron has signaled a significant strengthening of France’s partnership with Nigeria to combat escalating security crises, particularly the terrorist threat engulfing the northern region.
This move comes amid heightened international scrutiny, including an explosive threat of military action from former United States President Donald Trump.
In a message posted on X on Sunday, President Macron confirmed his phone call with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reaffirming France’s solidarity and outlining increased support for Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.
Macron emphasized the need for an urgent and active international response, warning against complacency from global partners.
“I spoke with President Tinubu of Nigeria, @officialABAT,” Macron wrote. “I conveyed France’s solidarity in the face of the various security challenges, particularly the terrorist threat in the North.”

He confirmed that Paris would deepen its cooperation and assistance at the request of the Nigerian President. “At his request, we will strengthen our partnership with the authorities and our support for the affected populations. We call on all our partners to step up their engagement.”
Macron concluded his statement with a pointed warning to the international community: “No one can remain a spectator.”
Trump’s Explosive Rhetoric and Military Threat
Macron’s measured commitment contrasts sharply with the aggressive rhetoric directed at Nigeria by President Donald Trump, whose repeated claims about worsening violence against Christian communities have drawn global attention to Nigeria’s internal security challenges.
Weeks earlier, Trump made a dramatic announcement on his Truth Social platform, threatening direct military action if the Nigerian government failed to curb the killings.
“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump wrote.
He continued by claiming to have mobilized the U.S. military apparatus in preparation for a strike: “I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!”
The divergence in approaches—Macron offering deepened partnership and support, versus Trump threatening sanctions and military intervention—underscores the complex diplomatic and geopolitical challenges facing the Nigerian government as it attempts to manage internal security threats.
