Village heads in Jigawa State have appealed to the state government to formalise their roles through official employment to enhance effective service delivery.
The traditional leaders made the call while commenting after receiving a new N10,000 monthly allowance, up from the previous N2,000, following a recent increase approved by Governor Umar Namadi.
Speaking in an interview, the village head of Maina in Ringim Local Government Area, Mallam Yahaya Ya’u, commended the governor for the increment but stressed the need for further action to strengthen their status.
He urged the state government to provide village heads with formal appointment letters, similar to those issued to district heads and other recognised traditional authorities.
According to him, such recognition would enhance their responsibilities and integrate them more effectively into the administrative structure.
Mallam Yahaya noted that village heads play a vital role in maintaining peace, monitoring community activities, and ensuring harmonious relationships between farmers and herders.
He added that formalising their roles would further empower them to support government efforts in grassroots governance and security.
