June 12: Every election cycle produces a worse result – Udenta

A fellow of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Prof Udenta O. Udenta, has lamented that every election cycle in Nigeria produces a worse outcome.

Udenta made this remark on Friday while speaking on Trust TV.

DAILY POST reports that Nigeria on Friday marked the 27th year of uninterrupted democratic governance.

Udenta described Nigeria’s democracy as alien, stating that it is not homegrown.

“Every election cycle in this democracy produces the worst outcome. It is not our democracy. It is not homegrown and not something indigenous to us. It didn’t evolve from our lived experiences.

“This is something we imported, and we are forcing that importation into our space, and expect that to work well.

“The presidential system very expensive system and very wasteful. You can have the governor or the president with lots of luxury. They can have billions of naira legally being wasted, not that money was stolen.

“So, when you have a system that is not designed for the people, the people find it difficult to answer that question. So, the direct answer is that in form, this democracy seems okay, but in content, democracy struggles because every election cycle produces a worse outcome,” he said.
