
The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed the deaths of two persons in separate search and rescue operations carried out on Thursday in Ungogo and Karaye Local Government Areas of the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Public Relations Officer of the Service, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said the incidents were reported to the Emergency Response Unit of the agency and rescue teams were immediately deployed to both locations.
According to the statement, the first incident happened at Bachirawa, Kwanar Madugu in Ungogo Local Government Area, after the control room received a distress call from Sulaiman Abdullahi Tela.
“An 18-year-old man, Yusif Malam Gwani Isah, fell into an open water source,” Abdullahi said.
“Our rescue team arrived at the scene, entered the water and retrieved the victim unconscious. He was later confirmed dead.”
He added that the body of the deceased was handed over to the Ward Head of Bachirawa quarters, Jibrin Isah.
The second incident occurred at Kofar Yamma in Karaye town, Karaye Local Government Area.
The Karaye branch of the Fire Service received a distress call from one of its staff members, PFS II Murtala Magaji.
Abdullahi explained that an eight-year-old boy, Abdussalam Ibrahim, had fallen into a well.
“The victim was rescued unconscious but was later confirmed dead,” he said.
He added that the child was handed over to his father, Malam Musa Mudi.
The Kano State Fire Service expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased and called on residents to be more cautious around open wells and other water sources.
The Service urged members of the public to take safety measures to prevent similar incidents, especially to protect children from falling into open water sources and other hazardous areas.
