Kidnap of 150 Kaduna Church Members: Amid denials and confirmation Obi questions credibility of police information

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged authorities to act decisively following the confirmed abduction of worshippers from churches in Kurmin Wali, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
In a statement released on Wednesday via his social media page, Obi criticised the initial denials by security agencies and questioned the credibility of their information. “Since it has now been confirmed that over 150 worshippers were kidnapped, where and how did those who denied the incident initially get their information?” he asked.

Obi stressed that true leadership requires presence and responsiveness, not just holding office. “Leadership is not only about grabbing power, but it is also about presence. It is about speaking when citizens are hurting, acting when lives are at risk, and showing clearly that every Nigerian life matters,” he said.

He called for immediate efforts to secure the release of the victims, insisting that Nigeria must confront its worsening insecurity with urgency. “We must act now to ensure that all victims are released safely and unharmed, and to continue confronting decisively this persistent crisis of insecurity in our nation. Enough is enough. A New Nigeria is possible,” Obi added.

After initial dismissals, the Nigeria Police Force later confirmed the abduction with early conflicting reports. Kaduna State Police Commissioner Muhammad Rabiu had earlier stated that troops found no evidence of an attack, but the Force subsequently verified the incident. Tactical units have since been deployed under the directive of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to carry out search-and-rescue operations.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) also criticised the delays and confusion in official communication, stressing the need for transparency and accountability in handling such crises.

The incident has reignited concerns about Nigeria’s persistent insecurity, particularly in Kaduna, where communities have repeatedly suffered attacks from armed groups.
