Five suspected cultists have been arrested by operatives of the Kwara State Police command, DAILY POST reports.
Their arrest is coming on the heels of the Violent Crimes Response Unit, VCRU, established recently by the command to reinforce intelligence-led crime fighting.
Its first major field operation was conducted on 18th May, 2026 at Kilanko and Post Office black spots in Ilorin metropolis, targeting suspected cultists’ hideouts and criminal enclaves linked to violent activities, according to a statement by the spokesperson of the command, SP Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi, in Ilorin on Tuesday.
”Acting on credible intelligence and in line with the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Rilwan Disu, operatives of the unit, in collaboration with community policing stakeholders and the VGN Special Squad led by Kayode Usman, executed a coordinated operation that led to the disruption of identified criminal hideouts.
”During the operation, AbdulRahman Jimoh, popularly known as Kangol, a notorious suspected cultist who had long been on the unit’s watchlist for his alleged involvement in various cult-related activities and other violent crimes within Ilorin metropolis, was arrested at about 2100hrs at the Post Office axis.
“A search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of suspected hard drugs. In a related sweep at Kilanko, four additional suspected cult members were also arrested,” he said.
The spokesperson said the operation underscored the unit’s sustained intelligence-driven approach to tracking, disrupting, and neutralizing violent criminal elements across the state.
Investigation is ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The state Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, commended the personnel of the VCRU for their professionalism, courage, swift response, and commitment to intelligence-driven policing in the fight against violent crimes across the state.
Ojo reassured residents of the state of the command’s unwavering resolve to sustain aggressive operations against criminal elements, while issuing a stern warning to cultists, drug peddlers, and all other criminal actors to stay clear of the state or face the full weight of the law.
