NEMA warns of severe flooding in 12 Kebbi LGAs

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has warned that 12 local government areas in Kebbi State are at risk of severe flooding during as the 2026 rainy season intensifies.

The warning was issued during a stakeholders’ engagement on the National Disaster Preparedness and Response Campaign 2026 held in Birnin Kebbi.

NEMA said September is expected to mark the peak of the flood season in the state, with projections indicating possible overflow of the River Niger.

The Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, represented by the Director of the North-West Zonal Directorate, Aliyu Shehu Kafindongi, said the flooding could affect farmlands, riverside communities and critical infrastructure.

According to the agency, elevated water levels may persist into October and November, prolonging the impact on affected communities.

The local government areas identified as high-risk include Argungu, Augie, Bagudo, Birnin Kebbi, Dandi, Fakai, Koko/Besse, Maiyama, Ngaski, Shanga, Zuru and Yauri.

NEMA called on traditional institutions, religious groups, women and youth organisations, the media and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at sensitising residents on flood preparedness.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Abubakar Abdullahi, said measures had been put in place by the state government to respond to possible flooding.

Also speaking, the State Director of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Nasiru Karofi, stressed the need for sustained public awareness and preparedness efforts in vulnerable communities.
