The Nigerian Army has denied claims that Haruna Garba Gololo, popularly known as Garus Gololo, is a retired general in the Nigerian Army.
In a statement issued on Tuesday via its social media platforms, the Army described reports identifying Gololo as a retired Nigerian Army General as false and misleading.
The reaction followed a publication in some media outlets that a retired Nigerian army general was arrested in Abuja after criticising Senate President Godswill Akpabio over comments on 2027 election.
According to the Army, Gololo is neither a serving nor retired personnel of the Nigerian Army and has never served in the force in any capacity.
“The Nigerian Army wishes to categorically state that the said individual is neither a serving nor retired personnel of the Nigerian Army and has never at any time served in the Nigerian Army in any capacity whatsoever.
“Accordingly, the portrayal of the individual as a retired General of the Nigerian Army is false, misleading, and capable of creating wrong impressions in the minds of the public,” part of the statement said.
The Army urged media organisations to exercise due diligence and uphold professionalism, accuracy and fairness in reporting issues relating to the Armed Forces and national institutions.
It also called on relevant media platforms to correct the misrepresentation to prevent the spread of misinformation capable of undermining public trust and institutional integrity.
The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency and the defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity in line with its constitutional responsibilities.
