
The Nigerian Army has called on Commanding Officers across its formations to take greater responsibility for combat readiness through professionalism and discipline.
This was contained in a statement posted on the official page of the Nigerian Army following the First Commanding Officers’ Workshop 2026 held on March 3 at the Army War College Nigeria, WU Bassey Barracks, Abuja.
Addressing the soldiers at the workshop, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, represented by Major General Olusegun Abai, said tactical leadership at the unit level must be driven by sound judgment and measurable results.
“Commanding Officers must take full ownership of combat readiness within their formations,” the statement said, adding that professionalism and discipline remain central to effective command.
Speaking in line with the theme of the workshop, which focused on “Enhancing Tactical Level Leadership in a Joint and Multi-Agency Environment,” the Army chief reiterated his vision of building a professional, adaptable and combat ready force capable of carrying out its constitutional duties.
He also urged officers to prioritise mentorship, realistic training, accountability and troop welfare.
In his remarks, the Chief of Training,Army, Major General Valentine Okoro, described the workshop as part of efforts to reinforce training standards and operational effectiveness across Army formations.
He encouraged participants to use the platform to improve coordination with other security agencies and refine internal processes.
The statement further noted that, the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General Maxwell Dangana, said Nigeria’s evolving security landscape demands adaptive and mission focused tactical leadership, urging officers to engage professionally and strengthen coordination across agencies.
