Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers;
1. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has secured the extension of the order to detain a former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai for another 14 days. The order was granted to enable the anti-graft agency enough time to conclude its investigation into allegations against the former governor, which has now widened.
2. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate deployment of about 100,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits across the country. The directive is part of efforts by the Federal Government to reduce transportation costs and expand alternative energy options amid the rising price of petrol and diesel triggered by the ongoing United States-Israel war with Iran.
3. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has bemoaned the defection of Governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying although there are only two governors in the party, he is not bothered. On Monday, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State announced his resignation from the PDP, leaving the Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Makinde as the only PDP governors.
4. The senator representing Rivers West, Ipalibo Banigo, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressives Congress, APC. In a letter read at the Senate plenary on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the senator attributed her decision to the protracted division within the party.
5. Dangote Petroleum Refinery, on Tuesday, reduced its ex-gantry petrol price by N100 per litre to N1,075 per litre from N1,175 per litre, following a drop in crude oil price to $88 per barrel from $110 per barrel. The refinery also announced that petrol supplied through coastal distribution will now sell at N1, 050 per litre.
6. The Federal Government has commenced the evacuation of willing Nigerians in Iran, escorting them safely across the Armenia border amid rising tensions in the Middle East. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), confirmed the operation in a post on her X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday.
7. The Naira on Tuesday depreciated to N1,420 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,410 per dollar on Monday. But the naira appreciated to N1,390.5 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, NFEM.
8. Authorities in Ghana have arrested 93 Nigerians over alleged cybercrime and human trafficking activities in Accra, while rescuing 73 other Nigerians reportedly subjected to torture and abuse. A report by ABC News GH on Tuesday, citing the Ghana Immigration Service, revealed that among those arrested were 91 men and two women facing charges related to cybercrime and immigration violations. The 73 rescued victims have been repatriated to Nigeria.
9. The Nigeria Customs Service said it seized 13 containers of prohibited, expired, and falsely declared goods worth over N6.38bn at Apapa Port. The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, disclosed this while addressing newsmen at the APMT Terminals in Apapa on Tuesday. Adeniyi explained that officers of the command uncovered the contraband following detailed scanning analysis and physical examination.
10. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the upgrade of all second-class chiefs to first-class and third-class chiefs to second-class, in the FCT Council of Chiefs.
Wike announced the approval in Abaji on Tuesday, during his visit to the area to thank the people for supporting Tinubu’s candidates in the Feb. 21 FCT area council elections.
