No one should be in jail for exercising their constitutionally protected rights – Sowore

The African Action Congress, AAC, presidential candidate, has narrated his ordeal in the Kuje correctional facility following his recent incarceration.

In a statement on Wednesday, the human rights activist said he was put in the same prison with 37 inmates undergoing tuberculosis treatment.

Recall that Sowore was granted N200 million bail on Tuesday by Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division.

“I was incarcerated alongside more than 1,158 inmates, including 37 undergoing treatment for tuberculosis,” he said.

He described the prison as overcrowded, stressing that no one should be jailed for merely exercising their constitutionally protected rights.

He noted that prison is not new to him, stating it was the reason he quickly settled into prison life.

“But the truth remains that no one should spend even a minute behind bars for an offence unknown to law or for exercising constitutionally protected rights,” the activist added.
