The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has issued a forceful condemnation of the threat of military intervention and aid withdrawal made by U.S. President Donald Trump in response to alleged genocide against Christians in Nigeria.
President Trump had declared on Saturday that he would deploy military forces and halt all assistance to Nigeria if the Bola Tinubu administration failed to stop the reported persecution and killings of Christians.
In a statement released on Sunday, Ojo Eniafe, Vice President of the NYCN, described the U.S. President’s ultimatum as a profound offense against the nation’s integrity.
“Nigeria is a sovereign nation, and the supposed crooner of peace unilaterally declaring an unprovoked war of aggression on a country is an abomination,” the statement read in part.
The youth body expressed outright disbelief and offense at the suggestion of foreign military action on Nigerian soil.
“It is absolutely ridiculous to have learned of the statement credited to the 45th and 47th presidents of the United States on potential military operations in Nigeria,” the statement continued.
The NYCN further argued that the threat was a calculated geopolitical maneuver, suggesting a pattern of U.S. foreign policy intervention when its interests are not met.

“Let it not surprise any discerning Nigerian. It is the same old tactics. Where the USA fails in installing a puppet regime to advance her national interest, it results in military operations,” the council asserted, linking the threat to Nigeria’s independent foreign policy.
“The centre stage for this play is nothing short of the Nigerian government’s non-alignment principles to align the American government’s interests,” the NYCN stated, adding that the U.S. was losing its global political influence as countries seek new alliances: “The USA has lost its global leadership in the most recent times as more and more countries seek alliances with other nations and blocs.”
Reiterating the country’s independent status, the group emphasized that Nigeria’s sovereignty is non-negotiable.
“The President of the United States must clearly accept and know Nigeria is a sovereign nation. It is non-negotiable. Therefore, imposing her agenda and resorting to threats to militarily destabilise the country is unacceptable.”
The NYCN concluded its statement by calling on the U.S. government to prioritize improving policy relations with other nations based on mutual development, “rather than seek to destabilise Nigeria.”
