Zaynab Otiti-Obanor, former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has explained the reasons behind her marriage to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume.
Zaynab, now known as Zaynab Ngohemba, married Akume in a private ceremony in 2024. The union, which recently became public knowledge, has stirred widespread discussion on social media, largely due to her previous marriages to prominent figures.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by her media aide, David Adeoye, and published by ThisDay, Zaynab described the marriage as a union “rooted in maturity, shared purpose, and mutual understanding.”
According to the statement, the relationship is not a personal reinvention but a partnership between two individuals already committed to public service and national development.
“It is a partnership shaped by maturity, shared purpose, and an understanding that personal stability strengthens public duty,” the statement read.

The statement further noted that the marriage reflects shared values such as humility, discipline, empathy, and responsibility, adding that it represents “the meeting of two lives already devoted to public purpose.”
“At a time when Nigerians increasingly demand integrity and humanity from those in leadership, this union sends a subtle but powerful signal that service is strongest when anchored in personal stability, shared values, and a long view of legacy,” it said.
It added that the couple embodies a leadership model that balances authority with empathy and structure with service, stressing that societies thrive when leadership is treated as a calling rather than a platform.
Zaynab was previously married to the Ooni of Ife in March 2016, but the marriage ended in 2017 after about 17 months.
