OpenAI is reportedly considering legal action against Apple over what it sees as a disappointing ChatGPT integration deal that failed to deliver the visibility and subscriber growth the AI company had anticipated. According to Bloomberg, tensions between the two tech giants have escalated sharply behind the scenes.
The report claims OpenAI has already hired an external law firm to evaluate its options, including the possibility of issuing Apple a formal breach-of-contract notice. While a full-blown lawsuit may not happen immediately, sources familiar with the matter said any legal action would likely be delayed until after OpenAI’s ongoing legal battle with Elon Musk concludes.
The partnership between both companies was unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2024, where Apple integrated ChatGPT into Siri and introduced the AI tool as part of its Visual Intelligence feature on iPhones. The collaboration was widely viewed as a major breakthrough that could expose ChatGPT to millions of Apple users globally.
However, reports state that OpenAI has become increasingly frustrated with how Apple handled the rollout. Executives at the AI company allegedly complained that ChatGPT features were buried within Apple’s ecosystem, difficult for users to discover, and far from the central position they expected on iPhones and other Apple devices.
The disappointing rollout reportedly translated into weaker-than-expected business results. OpenAI and industry analysts had predicted the partnership could generate billions of dollars in subscriptions and significantly boost ChatGPT’s adoption. “They basically said, ‘OpenAI needs to take a leap of faith and trust us.’ It didn’t work out well,” one OpenAI executive reportedly told Bloomberg.
