The Plateau State House of Assembly has said it is ready to support the creation of state police, pledging to give the bill priority consideration whenever it is presented before lawmakers.

Speaker Naanlong Daniel gave the assurance on Thursday in Jos during a visit by the Plateau State Advisory Committee on State Police, led by retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Habila Joshak.

Daniel said the Assembly believes state policing would help address the insecurity affecting Plateau and other parts of Nigeria.

“The Assembly believes state policing will contribute significantly to ending the prolonged insecurity affecting parts of Plateau State and other regions of the country,” he said.

The Speaker noted that lawmakers have consistently backed the idea and would not hesitate to pass the bill when it reaches the House. He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for efforts aimed at improving security across the country.

Daniel further assured the committee of the legislature’s full cooperation and readiness to provide the necessary legislative backing to ensure the success of the initiative.

Earlier, committee chairman Habila Joshak said Plateau’s long-standing security challenges make state police “a vital step toward strengthening security management, improving intelligence gathering, and restoring public confidence in law enforcement.”

He added that the committee could become “a reference point for other states across the federation” as discussions on state policing continue nationwide.

Joshak urged lawmakers to support the process, stressing that state police would help address security concerns at the community level and strengthen existing security structures.
