Plateau police drag 14 drivers to court in crackdown on concealed, illegal vehicle registration plates

The Plateau State Police Command has intensified its enforcement of vehicle registration regulations, arraigning 14 motorists before a court in Jos over offences linked to concealed, defaced and improperly registered number plates.

The action forms part of a broader security operation aimed at curbing the use of vehicles that cannot be easily identified or traced by law enforcement agencies.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, said the exercise was being carried out under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Bassey Ewah, as part of efforts to strengthen security across the state.

According to the command, the operation is designed to eliminate practices that enable criminals to evade detection, particularly through the use of vehicles with questionable registration details.

Explaining the objective of the exercise, the police spokesperson stated:

“The operation, in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu psc(+), NPM, is aimed at addressing security concerns associated with unregistered vehicles, concealed, defaced, or altered number plates, unauthorised foreign registration plates, and other non-compliance that hinders vehicle identification and tracking.

“So far, fourteen (14) vehicles have been impounded for violations. The owners/operators have been charged to court for offences bordering on use of unregistered vehicles, possession of vehicles with covered or defaced number plates, unauthorised display of foreign number plates, and replacement of approved registration plates with manufacturer logos or other unauthorised inscriptions.”

The command noted that the enforcement drive is a preventive security measure intended to close loopholes often exploited by criminal elements who rely on unregistered or improperly identified vehicles to avoid arrest and investigation.

Police authorities further stressed that the exercise is not targeted at law-abiding citizens but is part of ongoing efforts to improve public safety and strengthen crime-fighting capabilities within the state.

Commissioner of Police Bassey Ewah was said to have directed all officers participating in the operation to conduct themselves professionally and strictly within the bounds of the law while carrying out enforcement duties.

The command also urged vehicle owners and drivers across Plateau State to ensure that their vehicles are properly registered and that official number plates remain visible and unobstructed at all times.

Reaffirming the commitment of the police to maintaining security in the state, Alabo said, “The Plateau State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and appreciates the support of residents in building a safer Plateau.”

The latest enforcement action underscores growing efforts by security agencies to tighten compliance with vehicle identification regulations, which authorities say remain crucial in tracking criminal activities and enhancing public safety.
