The Imo State Police Command has dismissed a viral video alleging bandits’ attack in some communities in the state, even as it warned against false information.
In a press statement, the Command, through its Spokesperson, Henry Okoye, stated that it has observed with concern the purported video in circulation, which it described as an old video from mischief makers and purveyors of false information.
The Command described the video as false, misleading, and deliberately designed to create unnecessary fear, panic, and apprehension among the people of the State.
The Police, in the press statement, hinted that the video being circulated is an old footage of an attack carried out on July 25, 2025, at Ndi-Ejezie, Umualaoma, and Ndiakuwata Uno Communities in Arondizuogu, Ideato North LGA of the state, by unknown gunmen headed by one Ifeanyi Okenta, popularly known as Gentle the Yahoo.
The incident, according to the Command, resulted in loss of lives and does not represent any recent attack in the state.
“Following the incident, the Imo State Police Command, in synergy with other security agencies, carried out intelligence-led operations which led to the arrest and prosecution of some suspects, while others were neutralised during exchanges of gunfire with security operatives. Efforts remain ongoing to apprehend fleeing members of the group,” the release added.
The Commissioner of Police in the State, Audu Garba Bosso, while reacting to the development, urged members of the public, particularly Imo residents, to disregard the false video being circulated and desist from sharing unverified information capable of causing fear and undermining public peace and security.
He further warned individuals who deliberately create, circulate and amplify false security information to desist forthwith, saying that such persons will be identified, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Bosso also used the medium to reassure Imo residents of the Command’s unwavering commitment, in synergy with other security agencies, to safeguard lives and property across the state.
He encouraged members of the public to remain vigilant, rely on official information channels, and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest Police formation.
