Police recover fake currency from five suspects in Sokoto

The Nigeria Police Force, Sokoto state command said its operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit has arrested five suspected counterfeit currency network known as “Sai Malam.”

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, the Divisional Police Officer of Illela Division has transferred three suspects, Muhd Hamidu of Kwanni, Niger Republic, Umar Hassan and Sadik Isah of Illela Local Government Area to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

It said intelligence led to the arrest of two other suspects:, Buhari Abubakar and Kasimu Muhammad, both of Makera Asada quarters in Sokoto Metropolis

According to the statement, the command has successfully recovered counterfeit currency and fetish items believed to be used in the illegal operation by the suspects.

In a separate operation on March 10, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the command responded to a distress call about suspected members of the outlawed ‘Yan Sakai group in Dakalo village of Dange Shuni Local Government Area.

The group, led by one Sani Nabuzuwa, is suspected of being involved in cases of culpable homicide and cattle rustling.

“On sighting the police, the suspects opened fire but were subdued by the tactical team and fled into a nearby forest,” he said.

Items recovered at the scene include “a fabricated AK-47 rifle, a magazine loaded with 11 rounds of live ammunition, 180 sheep suspected to have been stolen and a Kasea motorcycle.
