The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has reacted to the Thursday ruling of the Federal High Court over the powers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The Abuja court had ruled that INEC lacks the statutory power to shorten timelines for party primaries and candidate nominations already prescribed by the Electoral Act.
Reacting, the PRP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammed Bello Ishaq, said it is studying the judgement, even as it noted that “there will be challenges ahead”.
Ishaq also said INEC may choose to appeal the judgement, but hoped “that patriots and influential stakeholders will intervene to restrain such actions.

This judgment, the party said, “promotes the growth and development of our democratic culture by restoring critical responsibilities to political parties, which INEC had usurped. It expands the scope for decision-making within parties and removes the unhealthy regimentation of our activities”.
It continued, that “ the ruling party, APC, is likely to be a major beneficiary of this judgment, given its current desperate state in addressing the multiple grievances arising from its attempts to handpick candidates.
“Other parties will also be eager to explore how this judgment can help them expand their membership and enhance the quality of their flag-bearers”.
PRP also used the opportunity “to invite well-meaning and patriotic Nigerians to our party so as to salvage Nigeria and Nigerians from the grip of bad governance”.
