Real Madrid in a shocking turn of events have broken their silence on a rumored transfer move to sign Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea this summer.
Real Madrid have issued a rare public statement dismissing reports linking the club with a move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez during the summer transfer window.
The Spanish champions moved to end growing speculation after a series of reports claimed manager Jose Mourinho wanted to bring the Argentine international to the Santiago Bernabéu. Rumours intensified following comments from Fernandez's camp suggesting the midfielder could be open to leaving Stamford Bridge.
However, Real Madrid made it clear that no discussions have taken place with Chelsea and insisted the club has no plans to pursue the 25-year-old.
In a statement published on the club's official website, Los Blancos said they have made "no effort, either directly or indirectly" to sign Fernandez and have "no intention" of launching such an operation.
The statement also praised Fernandez's ability while stressing the club's respect for Chelsea and the strong institutional relationship between the two clubs.
Real Madrid added that it felt compelled to respond because of the continued circulation of inaccurate reports, arguing that the speculation had created unnecessary confusion among supporters and unfairly affected everyone involved.
What did Real Madrid's statement say?
Enzo Fernández The statement read in part: "Real Madrid wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernandez, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely known, as well as for Chelsea FC, a club with which it maintains an excellent institutional relationship."
The club further said it was categorically denying claims that lacked any factual basis and reiterated that no transfer plans involving the Argentine midfielder exist.
Despite ruling out a move for Fernandez, Madrid have already strengthened their midfield this summer after completing the signing of Bernardo Silva following the expiration of his Manchester City contract.
The arrival of the Portuguese playmaker has increased competition in midfield and could lead to departures, with Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga both reportedly attracting interest from Manchester United.
Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround Fernandez's future at Chelsea. Reports indicate his representatives are exploring potential options away from Stamford Bridge, with the Argentina international previously expressing his admiration for Spain and his desire to one day live in the country's capital.
Fernandez also endured a difficult spell last season after being temporarily left out of the squad by then-head coach Liam Rosenior, further fuelling speculation over a possible summer exit.
