The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the nominations of the first three non-career ambassadors forwarded to it by President Bola Tinubu two weeks ago.

Those confirmed are Lateef Kayode Are from Ogun State, Aminu Muhammad Dalhatu from Jigawa State, and Emmanuel Ayodele Oke from Oyo State.

The confirmations followed the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Senator Sani Bello (APC, Niger North), which screened the nominees last week.

Presenting the report, Senator Bello said all three nominees were found worthy of appointment and that no petitions had been submitted against any of them.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, urged the confirmed nominees to serve as worthy ambassadors of Nigeria wherever they are posted.

President Tinubu’s letter containing the names of the nominees was read during plenary on 26 November by Senator Akpabio, after which it was referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs for screening.

In the letter, the President said the nominations were made in accordance with Section 171 (1), (2)(c) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

He therefore urged the Senate to “consider and confirm the appointments of the nominees expeditiously” while extending his “assurances of highest consideration” to the lawmakers.

Meanwhile, 64 other ambassadorial nominees have been forwarded to the Senate for screening and are yet to be confirmed.
