Serena Williams has officially announced her return to professional tennis at the age of 44, ending nearly four years away from competitive action.
The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion confirmed that she will compete in the women’s doubles event at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club in London later this month, having received a wildcard entry. Reports indicate that she is expected to partner rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko.
Williams has not played a professional match since her emotional farewell appearance at the 2022 US Open, where she lost to Ajla Tomljanović in the third round. Although many viewed that tournament as her retirement, Williams repeatedly insisted she was merely “evolving away” from tennis rather than officially retiring.
The announcement comes after months of speculation, especially following her return to the anti-doping testing pool in late 2025.
In a social media teaser, Williams posted the message “Good news travels fast,” fueling excitement among fans worldwide. She later described Queen’s Club as the perfect place to begin “this next chapter,” highlighting her love for grass-court tennis, a surface on which she won seven Wimbledon singles titles.
However it is yet to ascertain Whether this return remains limited to doubles or develops into a full singles comeback remains to be seen, but one of the greatest players in tennis history is officially back on court.
