SGF warns of scammers who clone phones, voices of govt officials seeking money for appointment offers

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has cautioned Nigerians to be vigilant against fraudsters impersonating high-profile individuals to solicit money under the guise of facilitating Federal Government appointments.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume dissociated himself from the activities of scammers who allegedly cloned his phone number and voice to target unsuspecting members of the public.

According to the SGF, the perpetrators contact victims claiming they have been shortlisted for appointments into federal boards and parastatals, before demanding payments ranging from ₦5 million to ₦15 million. Victims are reportedly instructed to send their curriculum vitae to cloned email addresses and deposit funds into bank accounts, some of which are linked to both new-generation banks and popular mobile money operators in Nigeria.

“The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has been inundated with enquiries relating to the activities of these fraudulent individuals and groups,” the statement read. “From available information, the fraudsters cloned the voice of the SGF to solicit money in return for federal appointments.”

Akume stressed that all federal appointment processes are transparent, merit-based, and verifiable, adding that no payment is required at any stage.

The SGF confirmed that relevant security agencies have been briefed and urged Nigerians to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement while taking necessary precautions to avoid falling victim.
