Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez has advocated for significant reforms to the United Nations, particularly calling for the abolition of veto power in the Security Council to enhance its representativeness.
In an interview with the Spanish digital outlet El Diario on Wednesday, Sanchez pointed out the “curious” situation of Russia and the United States holding permanent seats while contributing to global instability through conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.
“We must abolish the veto power within the UN,” Sanchez stated.
He also emphasized the need for greater representation for emerging global players, advocating for the inclusion of countries like India, Brazil, and key African nations.
This statement follows Spain’s firm position after US President Donald Trump threatened repercussions for Spain’s refusal to permit access to its military bases for potential operations against Iran.
