SSANU, NASU put planned nationwide strike on hold pending fresh talks With FG

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have again confirmed the suspension of their proposed indefinite nationwide strike, which had been scheduled to begin on May 11.

The President of SSANU, Mohammed Ibrahim, made the clarification during an interview with reporters in Abuja on Sunday.

According to Ibrahim, both unions agreed to temporarily halt the industrial action after receiving assurances from the Federal Government’s Expanded Tertiary Institutions Renegotiation Committee.

He explained that the unions had granted the government a two-week period to finalise negotiations and formally sign the pending agreements.

“We are giving a two-week window to conclude the renegotiation exercise and sign agreements as promised,” he said.

The Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU had earlier, on May 1, instructed members nationwide to prepare for an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare and labour issues affecting non-academic staff in tertiary institutions.

However, the planned action was suspended following renewed engagement with government representatives, who reportedly pledged to complete the renegotiation process within the agreed timeframe.

Ibrahim stated that the decision to pause the strike was based on what the unions considered credible commitments from the government side.

He stressed that the unions expect all negotiations to be fully concluded and documented before the expiration of the two-week deadline.

According to him, the suspension remains conditional and could be reversed if the government fails to honour its promises.

“We will closely monitor the negotiations within the two-week window.

“All outstanding issues must be resolved without further delay,” he said.

The unions are demanding the completion of the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, a review of salary structures and the implementation of collective bargaining agreements.

Other issues raised by the workers include improved welfare packages, payment of outstanding allowances and arrears, as well as opposition to unilateral salary adjustments, including the reported 30 per cent salary increase proposal.
