Terrorists invade Chibok community, set homes, shops ablaze

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have launched a fresh attack on Awapul, a community in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, destroying homes and businesses in a late-night assault that has heightened fears among residents.

The attackers reportedly stormed the village around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, firing gunshots indiscriminately before setting properties ablaze and leaving a trail of destruction.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said although the attack caused significant damage, no lives were lost.

“There was an attack this morning around 1:30 a.m. in Chibok Local Government, in a village called Awapul.

“The attack was carried out by unknown men suspected to be Boko Haram.

“No casualties. It was a destruction of properties,” he said.

Residents said the insurgents, who arrived on motorcycles, operated for more than an hour without interruption, burning houses and looting shops before fleeing the area.

One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that many affected villagers have since abandoned their homes in search of safety.

“They burned down houses and small shops. Some owners have gone to Chibok main town to take refuge,” the source said.

The resident appealed to authorities to prioritise security in the area, stressing that protection—not relief materials—remains the community’s most urgent need.

“Our plea is simple—not food or clothes. What we need is protection so we can go about our daily activities,” the source added.

The latest attack comes less than 24 hours after another wave of violence in the state, where suspected insurgents targeted an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Damasak and the Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters.

According to the police, the attackers deployed heavy weaponry, including Rocket-Propelled Grenades, in an attempt to overrun the facilities but were eventually repelled by security forces.

“The attackers, who deployed Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and other sophisticated weapons, caused damage to a section of the station and partially burnt an unserviceable Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC).

“Regrettably, four police personnel paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” ASP Daso said.

In a related incident on April 4, 2026, terrorists struck the Mallam Fatori IDP camp in Damasak, targeting a security post manned by local vigilantes and hunters.

“During the attack, one member of the Hunters Group, Atom Abua (40 years), lost his life, while about twenty thatched houses and properties were destroyed,” he added.

The spate of attacks has once again underscored the persistent security challenges in parts of Borno State, with communities in remote areas continuing to bear the brunt of insurgent activities.
