Suspected terrorists have allegedly killed five persons, razed homes, and abducted an unspecified number of residents in Baga community, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
Reports from the area indicated that the attackers stormed the community in the early hours of Tuesday, forcing villagers to flee for safety and abandon their homes.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said over 160 armed men invaded the community, setting houses ablaze with explosives.
“Over 160 terrorists invaded Baga early this morning and have been burning houses using explosives. As of this evening, the entire community is engulfed in flames with thick smoke rising,” he said.
It was gathered that at least eight members of the local vigilante group sustained injuries while attempting to repel the attackers but were overwhelmed by their number and firepower.
Sources further revealed that the assailants had, a day earlier, rustled several cattle from nearby Nada village within the same local government area.
They were said to have lost their way before arriving in Baga today, where the attack occurred.
Meanwhile, security operatives have reportedly been deployed to the affected area.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident, adding that the police would provide further details on the incident as soon as possible.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been issued on the development.
