‘There is money for politicians, so there should be money for workers’ — Sowore

Rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore has defended calls for a N500,000 minimum wage in Nigeria while criticising what he described as excessive spending by political office holders.

The remarks were contained in a statement posted on Sowore’s official page.

According to the statement, Sowore questioned arguments that Nigeria lacks the financial capacity to implement a higher minimum wage for workers.

He also referenced allegations circulating online involving Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa and claims relating to campaign funds.

“If there is money for politicians, there must be money for workers.

“₦500,000 minimum wage is not the problem. The problem is a political class that treats public funds as private property while millions of Nigerians suffer,” the statement read.

Sowore further argued that the country’s economic challenges are connected to corruption and misplaced priorities rather than a lack of financial resources.
