President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday called on the National Assembly to initiate constitutional amendments that would pave the way for the creation of State Police, describing it as essential to tackling Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.
Speaking during an interfaith breaking of fast with senators at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tinubu said Nigeria is “extremely challenged” by terrorism, banditry, and insurgency, stressing that decentralised policing is needed to secure forests and protect citizens.
“What I am asking for tonight is for you to start thinking how best to amend the Constitution to incorporate the State Police, for us to secure our country, take over our forests from marauders, free our children from fear,” he stated.
The President commended lawmakers for their support on security and economic reforms, promising continued collaboration. His appeal comes just days after he assured governors that the establishment of State Police “will not be postponed.”

Advocates argue that State Police would empower governors to respond more effectively to local threats, while critics warn of risks such as politicisation, abuse of power, and financial strain. Constitutional amendment would require approval by two-thirds of both chambers of the National Assembly and ratification by at least 24 state Houses of Assembly.
Tinubu also defended his administration’s economic reforms, including subsidy removal and foreign exchange unification, describing the previous system as “monumental corruption.” He insisted Nigeria now enjoys greater stability and urged senators to be proud of the progress.
“What we are enjoying is a stable economy, prosperity beckoning on us. We just need to work hard,” he said.
He further called for unity among political leaders, dismissing criticisms that he is “killing the opposition,” and highlighted the rare overlap of Ramadan and Lent as a moment for reflection and national solidarity.
