Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspected arms dealer in Taraba State over alleged involvement in the sale of 23 AK-47 rifles to a rogue vigilante group leader.

The development was contained in a post shared on X on Tuesday by security analyst Zagazola Makama.

Security sources said the arrest was carried out during a joint intelligence-led operation involving troops of the 20 Model Battalion and operatives of the Defence Intelligence Agency.

The operation reportedly took place around 3:30 am on May 17, 2026, at Sabon Gida village in Gassol Local Government Area of the state.

According to the sources, the suspect’s residence was raided following credible intelligence linking him to illegal arms trafficking in the area.

Preliminary findings allegedly showed that the suspect supplied 23 AK-47 rifles to a vigilante commander described as operating outside lawful structures.

“The suspect has since been taken into custody by the Defence Intelligence Agency for further interrogation and possible prosecution,” Makama said.

Security authorities said investigations were ongoing to track other individuals connected to the arms supply network and prevent further illegal circulation of weapons in the area.
