Trump walks out of Iran deal meeting without decision

A White House meeting convened by United States President Donald Trump to consider a possible agreement with Iran ended without a final decision, according to reports.

The Associated Press, citing a senior administration official, reported that Trump left the two-hour meeting earlier this week without approving or rejecting the proposed deal.

Before the meeting, which took place on Friday, the President stated in a social media post that any agreement to extend the ceasefire would require Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route affected by the conflict.

Trump also maintained that Tehran must commit to never developing a nuclear weapon and permit the United States to take custody of its stockpile of enriched uranium as part of any future arrangement.

Iran has consistently rejected those conditions.

According to the unnamed official quoted by the Associated Press, Trump would only endorse an agreement that aligns with his core conditions and effectively restricts Iran’s nuclear programme.

The White House discussions involving the President and his senior advisers came a day after several media organisations, including the Associated Press, reported that American and Iranian negotiators had reached a preliminary understanding.

The proposed agreement is aimed at extending the fragile ceasefire between both countries for an additional 60 days while further negotiations are conducted on Iran’s controversial nuclear activities.

No official announcement has yet been made regarding whether the United States will proceed with the deal.
