UK Deacon Nick Donnelly wants Sheik Gumi arrested, prosecuted over comments on US Christmas airstrikes

A prominent Catholic cleric in the United Kingdom, Deacon Nick Donnelly, has called on the Nigerian government to immediately arrest and prosecute controversial Nigerian Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, over his condemnation of the Christmas Day airstrikes carried out in parts of Sokoto State by the United States.

Following the airstrikes which were announced by President Donald Trump himself, Gumi had condemned the action, and urged the Nigerian government to immediately halt all military cooperation with the US.

According to the Kaduna-based cleric, Nigeria made a mistake by allowing foreign powers to play a role in its counterterrorism operations, while insisting that terrorists do not truly fight terrorists as such interventions often result in civilian casualties and hidden political motives and warned that allowing Nigeria to become a theatre of war would attract anti-US forces into the country, further destabilising it.

In a post on his Facebook page, Gumi had argued that airstrikes alone cannot defeat terrorism, stressing that effective counterterrorism requires strong ground operations, which he said Nigeria has enough personnel to carry out if properly organised.

“This said, it should only be carried out by clean, holy hands, not by another terrorist whose hands are stained with the blood of hundreds of thousands of innocent children, women, and men just recently.

“This is the mistake Nigeria has made. Terrorists don’t fight terrorists in truth; they may only kill innocent people and have ulterior motives behind the drama of fighting ‘terror’.

But while reacting to Gumi’s rejection of the US military action, Deacon Donnelly who is a permanent deacon in England, insisted that the cleric who is known for his pro-bandits stance, should be arrested and prosecuted.

Writing on his X account on Sunday, Deacon Donnelly accused Gumi of protesting the US military strikes against what he described as “bestial Islamist terrorists,” and condemned the cleric for allegedly referring to those carrying out violence against Christians as “our warriors.”

Donnelly further stated that Gumi must be put on trial for crimes against humanity, adding that Bola Ahmed Tinubu must publicly denounce the cleric or risk being seen as complicit in his actions.

“Sheikh Gumi protests President Trump’s Christmas military strikes against the bestial Islamist terrorists. Calling the terrorists conducting the genocide against Christians ‘our warriors’

“Gumi must be arrested and put on trial for crimes against humanity. Tinubu must publicly condemn Gumi or else he is declaring his complicity in his crimes,” said in the post.
