Millions of people in the United Kingdom will benefit as the government begins consultation on suspending tariffs on more than 120 everyday essentials.
London announced on Wednesday that the essentials covered under the policy have been published, building on the tariff suspension first introduced in April.
The list of 125 items includes garlic, avocados, mangoes, nectarines, vegetable oil, chocolate, sauces, soft drinks, fresh fruits and vegetables, olive oil, and baked beans.
The government will discuss the plan with businesses and other stakeholders, and also increase mileage rates for 3 million people who use their vehicles for work.
The authorities are also seeking views on whether suspension of tariffs on certain fertilizers could help farmers cope with rising costs triggered by the conflict in the Middle East.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves noted that the administration is responding to the Iran war impact by keeping prices down for households and businesses.
Reeves said the freeze on fuel duty, the mileage rate uprate — the first time in 15 years — and temporarily slashed VAT are part of measures to help reduce costs.
The relief, the Chancellor explained, was in recognition of how farmers and hauliers have been “exposed to high fuel prices, and their importance to UK supply chains.”
“We are a government firmly on the side of drivers, and that means acting when hardworking people are being left out of pocket,” said Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander.
