Uncle beats orphan into coma with shovel over missing phone in Kogi

A 20-year-old orphan, Muhammad Abdulmumin, is battling for his life after he was allegedly beaten into a coma by his uncle, Mallam Kamar Amoto, in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State. The assault reportedly followed accusations by Amoto that Muhammad had stolen his Android phone, the guardian reported. After subjecting the orphan to severe flogging to force a confession, the missing phone was later discovered in Amotos room. He reportedly admitted forgetting it there. An eyewitness said Amoto, a bricklayer, allegedly used a shovel to beat Muhammad until he lost consciousness. It was a concerned neighbour, Mr. Ahmed Rufai, who rushed the critically injured young man to Dosam Clinic for urgent medical care. Medical reports from Dr. Nyamida Samuel confirmed that Muhammad sustained severe internal bleeding and kidney damage. He has since been referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, where his condition remains critical. Community leaders have expressed outrage over the incident. Alhaji Hussein Aduvusu, former Chairman of the Adavi Joint Community, confirmed Amotos arrest and detention at the Okehi Police Division. This is not an isolated act, Aduvusu said. We have had several complaints about his violent behaviour. This must stop. Justice must be seen to be done." Residents are also calling for the Kogi State Government to not only prosecute Amoto but also mandate a psychiatric evaluation, citing past incidents of violence, including an attempt to stab his own son. Community members have described Muhammads case as a test of justice and accountability. "If we do not act decisively, we send a dangerous message that orphans, the most vulnerable among us, can be brutalized without consequence, a resident said. They urged state authorities to ensure the case is not allowed to fade quietly into the background, insisting that true healing for the community must begin with justice for Muhammad. The post Uncle beats orphan into coma with shovel over missing phone in Kogi appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
