Unity Cup: ‘I need time’ – Chelle sends clear message to Nigerian home-based players

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has sent a clear message to Nigerian home-based players following his side’s Unity Cup semi-final 2-0 win against the Warriors of Zimbabwe on Tuesday night.

Recall that Chelle watched as a brace from Femi Azeez ensured Nigeria defeated Zimbabwe at The Valley in London.

The Malian had included some home-based players from the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, in his squad for the Unity Cup.

The home-based players include Michael Atata, Aderemi Adeoye, Tosin Oyedokun, Chibueze Oputa, Obinna Igbokwe, and Elias Ochobi.

Speaking at his post-match interview after the match, Chelle stated that he needs some time to work with the domestic players for them to be part of the small project.

He, however, said that he was happy with the performances they showed to Nigerians against Zimbabwe.

“I need some time to work with them [Nigeria home-based players] and be part of the small project,” Chelle said.

“Nigeria won’t stop for that. I hate to do that, but I know the player; it’s difficult for them to be here because maybe some of them, this is their first time in Europe, so the pressure was high for them.

“But as I said earlier, I am happy with what they showed to Nigeria,” he said.
