The management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has suspended two senior staff members and the President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) over alleged illegal collection of money from students.
The affected officials are Olanrewaju Ogunjobi, Director of the Directorate for Educational Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Banji Rildwan Olaleye, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Support Services; and James Iyanuoluwa Adio, SUG President.
According to the university registrar, Mufutau Ibrahim, Ogunjobi and Olaleye were accused of collecting ₦1,000 from each first-year student for practical classes organised by the directorate without approval from the university management.
The registrar said the university set up an investigative committee to examine the allegations and ensure fairness.
The committee reportedly found that Ogunjobi approved and collected the money without obtaining approval from the university management or Senate.
It also stated that the funds were not processed through the university bursary as required by regulations.
Olaleye was accused of assisting in the collection of the money despite his role in the student affairs department.
The committee also alleged that Adio, the SUG President, was indirectly involved in the matter.
According to the report, he participated in the initial sharing of the money and later requested a refund, leading to the transfer of ₦700,000 into his personal bank account.
The university said the actions of the three officials contradict its efforts to promote transparency and accountability.
FUOYE management stressed that it would not tolerate student extortion, abuse of office, financial misconduct, or any act capable of damaging the institution’s reputation.
The suspended officials are expected to face further administrative processes as the university continues its investigation.
