The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has suggested that the US war against Iran may soon come to an end, saying American forces have nearly exhausted their targets inside the country.
Speaking in an interview with Axios, Trump said the US military has already struck most of the locations it planned to hit.
“Practically nothing left to target,” Trump said, adding that the war could end quickly.
“Any time I want it to end, it will end.”
The US president has recently sent mixed signals about the duration of the conflict. Earlier in the week, he also hinted that the fighting could stop “soon.”
Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on Trump at home.
His approval ratings have reportedly fallen, while concerns are rising over the global economic impact of the joint US-Israeli military campaign against Iran.
However, Israel appears less eager to halt the military operation.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the campaign would continue for as long as necessary.
“This operation will continue without any time limit, as long as necessary, until we achieve all the objectives,” Katz said on Wednesday.
Iran, on the other hand, has warned that the war could drag on for an extended period.
Ali Fadavi, an adviser to the commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, said the United States and Israel should prepare for a long and damaging conflict.
According to him, the war could turn into a protracted battle that might weaken both the American military and the global economy.
On Wednesday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also claimed responsibility for attacks on two commercial ships near the Strait of Hormuz—a Liberia-flagged vessel and a Thai bulk carrier—raising fears that the conflict could further disrupt global shipping and energy supplies.
