Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, departed Abuja on Sunday, heading for Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where he will represent President Bola Tinubu at the inauguration ceremony of President Alassane Ouattara. The Ivorian leader is being sworn in for his fourth term in office.
Vice President Shettima is expected to join a gathering of heads of state and dignitaries from across Africa and the global community to witness the swearing-in, which is scheduled to take place on Monday, December 8, 2025, at the Presidential Palace in Abidjan.
President Ouattara was successfully re-elected for a fourth term on October 25, 2025, in a country that maintains consistently cordial diplomatic ties with Nigeria.
The bilateral relationship between the two West African economic powerhouses is comprehensive, with both nations collaborating significantly within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) on critical matters of security, trade, and regional development. These ties are formalized through a Bi-National Commission and numerous agreements covering areas such as anti-trafficking, agriculture, and the digital economy. Furthermore, strong informal trade and a significant Nigerian diaspora in Côte d’Ivoire foster deep bilateral economic and social connections.
The Vice President’s delegation underscores the strategic importance Nigeria places on its relationship with Côte d’Ivoire. He is accompanied by key officials, including: Omar Aliyu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and Hon. Usman Zannah, representing the Kaga/Gubio/Magumeri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives
Senator Shettima is expected to return to Abuja immediately following the conclusion of the inauguration ceremony.
